Additionally, he is featured in books by Buzz Rose - The Rim Riders, and Kings of the Hills; and Todd Gould - For Gold and Glory.

Joie was born in 1923 in Louisville. He drove his first race in 1947 and was sometimes called “The World’s Only Colored Racing Driver”.
